Ready to Hang

Madeleine Agnew
Oil on canvas

The title is ‘Ready To Hang’, referring to the unique setting which allows the viewers to visualise how the art looks within a home-like setting, literally being able to take pieces out of that environment and instantly hang in their own homes. It also is a head nod to the idea of being about to ‘hang’ with others again.

A virtual tour of the exhibition will be available at https://www.maddiepaints.co.uk/ready-to-hang/

Getting Around

Getting to Artweek

To get to Holmfirth

Fringe venues are dotted around the Holme Valley and Colne Valley areas, the largest cluster is in the centre of Holmfirth, which makes this the ideal spot to start from. There is parking in the  Co-op car park directly across the road from the Civic Hall in the centre of Holmfirth, or a number of buses from the surrounding villages and towns to Holmfirth bus station.

This includes the 308/314/316 from Huddersfield.

The 435/436 from Wakefield.

The 25A from Penistone, and the 29 from Chapeltown via Penistone.

To get to the further venues via public transport

For venue 17 in Netherton, take the 310/314/316 bus from Holmfirth bus station to the Parkgate Waingate stop at Berry Brow, which is a 0.6 mile walk from Studio 132.

For the Slaithwaite venues, take the 335 bus from Holmfirth bus station to Slaithwaite.

For the Marsden venues, get the train between Slaithwaite and Marsden or the 183/184/185/938 bus.

Getting Around Artweek

Holme Valley Parish Council climate action. If it's not far, leave the car

Why not combine visiting Artweek venues with exploring some of the great countryside, buildings and businesses to be found in the Holme Valley. To help you enjoy Artweek without using your car, the Holme Valley Parish Council have put together three walking routes linking venues in the Holme Valley. Routes start and finish at Holmfirth Bus Station.

Click here for maps and routes on the Holme Valley Climate Action website

The routes use footpaths and roads. Many footpaths have uneven surfaces and if there has been recent heavy rain some may be muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

A downloadable map(s) and written description are provided for each route. Artweek venues are numbered in the description for ease of cross referencing with the information on the Artweek website.

The routes are suggestions only and you use them at your own risk. The Artweek and Holme Valley Parish Council cannot accept responsibility for your safety when using these public rights of way.

Holme Valley Parish Council logo

This 2 mile walk will take you to 9 Artweek Fringe venues, past many shops, cafes and bars and alongside a stretch of the River Holme. The walk starts at Holmfirth Bus Station.

Leave the bus station by walking to the main road (Town Gate). Turn right and walk to the zebra crossing and cross the road. Turn right and cross Dunford Road. Turn left into Dunford Road and visit the Artweek Fringe Venue (1) at the Andy Fullalove Studio and venue (2) at the Helen J Bray Studio. Then walk back down Dunford Road and keeping left at the junction, walk into Hollowgate. Continue along Hollowgate and visit exhibitions from the Holmfirth camera Club and K&S Ceramics Group in the Market Hall (3). Leave the Market Hall on the lower floor and turn right to continue along Hollowgate (if you leave from the upper floor, turn left for Fair Trader). Turn right over the bridge and visit the Artweek venue (4) in the Fair Trader shop. On leaving Fair Trader walk along Huddersfield Road to the traffic lights. Cross at the lights and visit the Yorkshire Colourists exhibition in the Old Tourist Information Centre (5).

On leaving the venue turn left and walk along Huddersfield Road to visit Holmfirth Civic Hall (6) and then onto Unity Yard (7). After leaving Unity Yard, cross Huddersfield Road at the crossing and turn left. Walk along Huddersfield Road to the entrance to Sands Recreation Ground. Turn right and right again and follow the road to the bridge. Cross the bridge, turn right and follow the path alongside the river skirting the playing fields. At the end of the path turn right to follow the permissive right of way past the Holmfirth Crown Green Bowls Club and the Cricket Club. Continue past the forge and at the junction with Bridge Lane turn right. Visit the exhibition at Holmfirth Tech (8) on the corner with Huddersfield Road. On leaving the Tech, then turn left and cross Bridge Lane and continue to the Postcard pub. Turn left into Crown Lane and then right to walk along the edge of Crown Bottom car park to the Artweek exhibitions from Hens Teeth, North Light Art Collective and North Light Potters, in the Methodist Hall (9).

On leaving the Methodist Hall turn right and walk down the road (School Street) to the River Holme. Cross the bridge and walk across the park to Towngate or turn right to follow the riverside walk back to the bus station where this walk ends.

This 4-mile walk follows the River Holme along the valley bottom and takes you to 6 Artweek venues. The walk starts at the Holmfirth Bus Station.

Leave Fair Trader on Huddersfield Road and turn left to continue on the Holmbridge walking route.
